Boathouse
Rowing is unique among collegiate sports due to its dependence on highly technical, iconic racing shells and lack of a man-made playing field. The shells essentially become the sport in and of themselves. Since the boats are so completely intwined metaphorically with the sport, they should also be literally pervasive in the life of the athletes, occupying the same spaces, their absence drastically altering the experience of the building’s occupants. Additionally, the boats themselves act as almost sculptural objects; a result of centuries of refinement, their silhouettes an embodiment of their movement through water. The same should be true of the boathouse, echoing the movement of the boats, evoking momentum.
